About Julia

A human, creative and experienced approach

I am a Brighton-based counsellor, clinical supervisor, reflective practice supervisor and consultant with over 22 years of experience in mental health and wellbeing working in both public and private sectors.

Before training therapeutically, I worked in the arts, managing theatre companies and developing inclusive programmes for Deaf and Disabled performers. That creative foundation continues to influence and enrich my therapeutic approach.

I transitioned into mental health at Bethlem Hospital, London within CAMHS before moving to Balham Family Centre counselling young people and adults. After relocating to Brighton, I joined YMCA Therapeutic Services, working as a counsellor and supervisor in schools and community settings as well as developing training programmes and delivering trauma informed reflective practice supervision.

Living in Brighton’s diverse community deeply informs my work and allows me to connect with people from many different backgrounds. My approach is person centred, creative, and grounded in evidence based theory, with a strong focus on building safe, inclusive spaces for growth and change.

Alongside private practice, I work as Clinical Lead Manager for YMCA Therapeutic Services. I bring a calm, organised and strategic approach to leadership, with strong interpersonal skills and creativity, enabling me to navigate complex situations effectively and support positive outcomes.

Counselling for adults

A steady place to bring what feels difficult

Counselling can provide a safe, confidential space to express feelings, explore behaviour patterns and develop new ways of moving forward.

Through a therapeutic relationship grounded in compassion, psychological insight and professional understanding, counselling can help build clarity, confidence and a renewed sense of agency. Together, we focus on what matters most to you, working collaboratively to strengthen your capacity to navigate challenges and feel more in control of your life.

I draw on a range of approaches – including person centred therapy, psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), transactional analysis (TA) and creative therapies – to create a tailored, supportive experience that encourages meaningful change.

I work with adults experiencing a wider range of challenges. These include relationship difficulties, divorce or separation, bereavement and loss, work related or life related burnout, trauma, and experiences of abuse.

I also support individuals exploring aspects of sexuality or gender, and those managing disordered eating, drug or alcohol related difficulties. For some, stress, low mood, depression, anxiety or suicidal thoughts make life feel heavy, and therapy offers a safe and consistent space to be heard.

For those affected by trauma, I provide a compassionate, contained relationship where they can slowly explore their experiences and begin to find new ways forward.

I also have extensive experience supporting adults with disabilities, including cerebral palsy; those who are hard of hearing, Deaf, visually impaired or blind; and those who are neurodivergent, including Autism (ASC) and ADHD. I always work in ways that are respectful, inclusive and strengths based.

Supervision

Clinical Supervision

Supervision is a place to pause, think, feel and stay connected to the heart of the work.

I offer individual and group supervision for counsellors and therapists including those in training across different settings. Together we develop a relationship that is shaped around your theoretical model, practice and needs.

Read more about clinical supervision

My supervision is grounded in established, reflective models that support practitioner development, ethical practice and high quality client care. I tailor supervision to your experience, setting and professional context, offering both rigour and warmth within a collaborative relationship.

I draw on a range of recognised supervision frameworks, including:

  • Proctor’s Model, supporting the normative, formative and restorative functions of supervision
  • Hawkins & Shohet’s Seven Eyed Model, exploring the work from multiple relational and systemic perspectives
  • Stoltenberg & Delworth’s Developmental Model, adapting supervision to your stage of professional growth

Alongside these models, I work integratively, drawing from a range of therapeutic approaches to deepen reflection and strengthen practice. These include person centred therapy, psychotherapy, CBT, attachment based approaches, trauma informed practice and creative therapies.

Supervision can also provide a space to explore decision making and professional responsibility. I regularly support practitioners to reflect on clinical thresholds, consider appropriate service pathways and navigate complex or high risk situations with clarity and confidence.

My work places strong emphasis on relationship, trust and professional development. I have extensive experience fostering effective supervisory relationships, supporting learning and reflective growth, and contributing to safe, well functioning services.

I also bring substantial experience of safeguarding and child protection, including monitoring risk, working with safeguarding concerns and ensuring practice remains aligned with statutory and organisational protocols.
